He was like the Red Army soldiers Fitz had marched with, forever reaching for their little red books. ‘That’s their natural inclination,’ finished Margwyn, ‘and, with our peoples now at war, I think the very sight of us disturbs them.’ ‘No kidding,’ muttered Fitz. ‘That’s the situation we seek to correct, in the most peaceful way possible,’ Margwyn insisted. ‘If we can make Constantine close the gateway and expel the forces from Earth, then these folk can make peace with my people, and ever5Thing will be settled.’ His voice took on a wistful quality. ‘We will return to the state of tangnefedd, the great peace of grace and gentle rule.’ Fitz snapped his fingers and pointed to Compassion. ‘Hey! I’ve just thought! Tangnefedd! That’s Welsh or whatever! The first thing he’s said that I didn’t understand, like what sometimes happens to us on another planet if the language is complicated! Don’t you get it? If the TARDIS has been destroyed and the Doctor’s dead, why can we still understand what this lot are saying?’ But Margwyn was shaking his head. ‘In Constantine’s dream all peoples can speak to each other.’ Compassion nodded. ‘I don’t think the Doctor will save the day this time, Fitz. If the TARDIS still existed, then Td feel it, feel it. . . ’ She frowned again. ‘Holding me back. Saving me.’ She raised a hand to stop Fitz asking what she meant. ‘I think all we can do is decide what the Doctor would do, and pursue that aim.’ ‘So do you think he’d go along with Margwyn’s plan?’ Fitz watched the mage’s face. ‘I don’t know. . . ’ Compassion replied. ‘I think Margwyn’s an ethical man, but. . . ’ She reached out her finger to hover just over the surface of the vortex once more. ‘I just think there’s something that we’re all missing.’ The sleek black helicopter sped north, dipping and bobbing over the terrain below. The air around it was getting thicker and thicker, full of drops of green fluid that splattered against the fuselage and were flung aside in great sweeps by the blades. At the back of the aircraft’s cabin sat the Doctor, half asleep, his head nodding to the beat of the rotors. In his mind, a woman was touching his brow with a cool hand and telling him ah was not lost. He jerked awake and looked around wildly when Caldera touched him on the shoulder. ‘Two minutes to go,’ he murmured. The Doctor noted that the men ah around him were tensed, all looking towards the side door beside which one of their number sat, his hand on the release lever. 112
